Building Blocks

The consultants at Your College Story provide individualized expert planning. Guidance counselors, college admission officers, college websites, and even other parents offer a lot of advice. Much of this advice is good, but it’s not always relevant to your child’s specific needs. We work with A, B, and C students. We work with students who have diagnosed learning disabilities. We work with elite athletes and students who need to create artistic portfolios for their applications. The one thing that is consistent for every one of our students is our process.
Get to Know Your Child
Do you find yourself brainstorming college essay ideas for your child? We will take the time to get to know your child. Each student has life experiences or academic and personal accomplishments that can be compelling to colleges. Together, we will find that college story and tackle the laborious job of writing/editing essays, resumes, applications, and all other college communication. We create a cohesive package highlighting your child’s individuality.
Build Their Self-Confidence
Are you and/or your child discouraged that their college(s) of choice may be too much of a “reach?” Yes, it’s true that college admissions is becoming more and more competitive. We will help your child realize that there are many colleges that would be happy to have them and that they would be happy attending. Besides you, we will be their biggest advocates. Our approach is always that of encouragement.
Guide the Family
Are you worried that you might not be providing the right guidance through the process? You want the best for your child and you may not know exactly how to proceed. High school guidance counselors are a good source, but they support many students and often don’t have the time to provide individualized attention. That is what we do. Every student has different needs and goals and we guide the entire family by explaining how to best work toward those goals.
Select the Best Fit
Do they want to attend colleges that are big, small, warm, cold, far, close, urban, suburban, with greek life, or faith-based? There are many factors that you and your child are considering when selecting colleges to which to apply. Besides working to meet these emotional and social objectives, we also provide guidance and individualized research if they are interested in pursuing a particular college major or an academic scholarship. There is a college for every student and we will help your child create an appropriate list of colleges.
Plan Out the Process
Are you worried about missing a step? We help your child plan out every step of the college application process and provide reminders along the way. Deadlines will be met. When appropriate, we also provide advice on which colleges to apply to early in order to garner at least one acceptance in the early application pool. We aim to lower stress levels.
Save Time
Are you searching through college websites and find the overabundance of information overwhelming? Because every student has different needs, sometimes research is necessary to determine how to best meet those needs. We do this all the time and know how to streamline the process.
Be a Voice of Reason
Do you and your child get emotional when discussing the college application process? College planning is a sensitive topic and can be stressful for the entire family. We respect your family dynamics and offer non-intrusive support. We work hard to gain a student’s trust in order for them to accept our well-meaning nudges, especially if he/she begins to become weary and lose momentum.
